![]() Exterior areas in the Midwest are frequently wet, handle high traffic, and are exposed to chemicals. In addition to cold weather temperature fluctuations, tile needs to be chosen based on the special use it will receive. Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on materials and cause longer curing times. Note! Pay attention to the outside temperatures during installation. Although porcelain tiles are often already sealed, natural stone and some other tiles may benefit from an application of sealant. To protect the tile from stains and moisture, apply a sealant.Sealants may be helpful in preventing moisture from entering the tile assembly.Consider substituting grout additives for water when using standard grouts. ![]() Polymer-modified grout is a good choice because it absorbs less water.Use grout that is compatible with the tile.Mortars with good bond strength, combined with flexibility will allow for movement in the substrate due to varying moisture levels.Freeze-thaw cycle resistance can be better achieved with polymer-modified thin-set mortars.Make sure to bond the tile to the substrate with complete mortar coverage.Use mortar that is compatible with the tile.Choose tile that is intended for exterior This may seem like a no-brainer but we do see interior tile installed outside – it lasts exactly one freeze-thaw season.Use tile that has a porosity level of 3% or less. In the winter, the water-filled cells will expand and the tile will crack. Choose tile that does not absorb much water. Tile porosity affects exterior performance.Go with a quality porcelain tile from a reputable manufacturer like Daltile or Virginia Tile.Expansion joints are a given – allow for inevitable tile movement by providing joints over anti-fracture membranes.Cover the substrate with an isolation membrane to isolate moisture and to prevent cracks from telegraphing through to the tile. The substrate (surface on which the tile is installed) must be solid and stable.Exterior tile installations need to be able to handle all this up-and-down movement without cracking or chipping. As the weather changes, the ground begins to thaw and it contracts, moving downward. In the winter, the ground expands with frost and it heaves upward. Cold Weather ChallengesĬold weather locations present special challenges when it comes to tile products and installations. Exterior tile installed in our climate needs to be resistant to slipping, chemicals, and harsh weather conditions. Choosing the right tile for the application and location is essential to long-lasting performance. Not all tile is created equal – in fact, there are a wide variety of tile product choices on the market. Take time to select frost-resistant materials and installations that will withstand our Midwestern weather extremes. Working together, properly selected materials will be able to withstand anything that winter throws their way.Īs the weather turns colder, the prospect of the coming winter becomes more real. Consider the complete installation and how the various materials work as a system, including the intended substrate and all the materials: tile, mortar, grout, and sealant. Think about how the exterior tile will be used and the kinds of abuse to which it will be subjected. But you could also use standard patio edging (like you would for a brick patio) or even pressure treated 2″ x 4″ boards.Be smart when selecting exterior tile in areas with cold climates. The only thing you’ll need is to install some edging around the area where your patio will be. If you are installing over a concrete patio or flat, compacted dirt, then you don’t need to do any preparation to make the surface flat. The one lesson I have learned that makes the tile installation so much easier, is to make sure that you are putting them down over a level surface. Once you have decided on the color, measure the length and width of the space, and multiply them to come up with the square footage that you need. All of the tiles except for the lightest one got so hot in the sun that I couldn’t walk on them (I do like to walk around in bare feet)…which also meant that my dog wouldn’t want to walk on them either. I laid them out and left them there for a little while…and then mother nature made the decision for me. I couldn’t make up my mind which one I liked best, so I ordered a bunch of samples to see them in person. But he can't, at that point viewers would say, excuse me."Ĭornwell later praised society's recent rejection of the romanticization of such eras, saying "It was a terrible, terrible time to be alive. I can't see anything else we have in common. Cornwell also distanced himself from "Thrones" in an interview with The Guardian, saying, "unless the appeal is brutal men in chain mail. So they put a lot of naked women behind it all," something he said his stories didn't require. In a Radio Times interview shared by The Belfast Telegraph, Cornwell criticized the series, saying "You have to have large sections where the plot is explained, (and you) just have to sit there. It's a stunning recreation of the actual artifact, which has long been associated with Alfred thanks to its location, age, and inscription, which reads: "Alfred ordered me to be made" (via Ashmolean Museum). Williams points out in a piece for Archeodeath, the series' prominent placement of an artifact known as Alfred's Jewel "affords an aura of authenticity to the show." As you may recall, Alfred gives Aethelwold (Harry McEntire) a gold-encased, teardrop-shaped jewel before he leaves for Northumbria. There's a physical artifact that makes its way into the show as well. While the brief scene might seem like mere character development to American audiences, the story of "Alfred and the Cakes" is what Historic UK calls "one of the best known stories in English history." During Alfred's time on the run in the marshes (a story that also appears, by all accounts, to be true), the fleeing monarch accidentally burns several "cakes" of bread. As Cornwell put it, "the moment I met my real family, I thought: 'Somehow this family survived the coming of the Danes, the Vikings, all the way through to King Canute, there was a family connection." So while Uhtred of "The Last Kingdom" isn't Uhtred of history, he was nonetheless inspired by someone equally as real.Īlfred's physicality isn't the only historical detail to make its way into the show. The author explained that his family tree dated back to the 6th century, and that they were "the Lords of Bebbanburg (Bamburgh Castle) in Northumberland, there was an Uhtred." Although the author admits that history "(knows) sod all about him," he nonetheless credits finding the name amongst his ancestry with inspiring his beloved, conflicted Saxon badass. His little story came to him after the adopted Cornwell met his birth father, William Outhred (sound familiar?). ![]() There's a bit of "Hamlet," a bit of " Vikings," and a whole lot of real-life history in the series, whose focus on the religious conflict of the era adds intriguing layers to the show's thematic resonance.Īs Cornwell explained to The Guardian in 2015, "most historical novels have a big story, and a little story -– you flip them and put the little story in the foreground." His big story was, of course, Alfred's successful efforts to hold back the Danes and lay the groundwork for what would become England. The charismatic pagan Uhtred - a Saxon who was raised by Danes (aka Vikings) - reluctantly swears allegiance to the Christian Alfred in an effort to take back his fortress and lands in Bebbanburg, which was stolen from him by his conniving uncle upon his father's death. Starring familiar period piece actor David Dawson (of " Peaky Blinders," "The Hollow Crown," and "Ripper Street") as the legendary and historical King Alfred the Great, the series is set in the ninth century and centers on the revered English monarch's (fictional) right-hand warrior, Uhtred of Bebbenberg (Alexander Dreymon). Less than a year after its debut on the BBC, "The Last Kingdom" - an adaptation of author Bernard Cornwell's "The Saxon Stories" - appeared on Netflix and developed a massive, loyal following in relatively short order. ![]() Over the first act, he has some strange encounters, introducing the player to how the game will bend the laws of reality in clever, sometimes funny ways. To get there, he has to find the Zero, a mysterious highway system that he learns about through a series of ever-increasingly weird and possibly supernatural people. This is very much a heavy stylised game, and was previously enhanced for Xbox One X consoles, so any graphical updates to current-gen are negligible. It was atmospheric, mostly, capturing the pastoral and gloomy color palette that'll carry over into the other episodes - called Acts - along with the setup for a story involving a truck driver named Conway on his final delivery. However, these are the only real noticeable updates. There is a pretentiousness to the game it proudly displays a title screen every time you enter a new scene for reasons unknown and the soundtrack is predominantly that hipster folk music that spawned a thousand imitators. On PC, this is known as The Postmodern Update – a name that is very in-keeping with how Kentucky Route Zero holds itself. New translations have been added too, for Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Swedish, Thai and Turkish, alongside some updates to existing translations. It feels like you are recruiting party members for a JRPG at times, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Then there is a singer and her keytar-playing friend who decide to offer you directions, then tag along for the journey. There is a kid who suddenly appears alongside you after you discover his parents seemingly abandoned him. And there are others on this journey too they seem to appear from the strangest of places. I fully appreciate that Kentucky Route Zero is a slower paced game, where you are expected to explore and fully integrate yourself into the world, but let me do that at a pace that at least keeps things interesting. And then, early on he suffers a wound to his leg, which slows him down even more. This is compounded by the main avatar you control – a man named Conway – not exactly being in a rush to get anywhere. ![]() Often you will need to walk in front of or behind objects and walls to find where you need to go, and the 2D plane limits your view of this.
